BLUES MATTERS ISSUE 43

The Stumble @ The Running Horse, Nottingham 31/12/07

When The Running Horse closed for a revamp, many feared it would become a 'trendy' pub, losing its reputation as Nottingham's 'House of Blues'. New Year's Eve, with the help of The Stumble, The Runner firmly took back its reputation. One comment summing up the whole evening, a Blues fan shouting, 'Can you spell f*****g awesome?' Well, The Stumble were and for anyone who believes that Blues is dead, boring and you can't dance to it, that myth was shattered in Nottingham in the first hour of 2008. This was an energetic and driven performance by The Stumble, pitched at just the right level of uptempo blues for the occasion, with some highly impressive vocal and instrumental work throughout. They kicked off with a short acoustic set during which Boyd left his drums to show his prowess on guitar, with an outstanding interpretation of Bill Withers' 'Ain't No Sunshine'. One of the highlights of the gig was a superb rendition of B.B.King's 'All Over Again'. Lead guitarist Colin may want to be 'buried with Led Zeppelin', but not yet please, not after the solo he performed! Playing a Les Paul, he put his guitar through its paces. Simon's sax, on this number, gave the whole a very ethereal feel and complimented well both lead and vocal. Paul is a lead singer of quality, he has good vocal range and volume, his intonation and microphone use are a model of practice, whilst his stage persona is on eyounger frontmen would do well to learn from.
